How do I hire an interpreter?
Interpreter Referral Agencies
Agencies are companies who provide their customers with interpreter services on an as-needed basis. They maintain a list of affiliated interpreters, either on their staff, or contracted with pre-established terms and rates.
Using an agency can be a great option for organizations that do not wanting to spend time searching for an interpreter. After a request is received, the agency takes-on the responsibility to connect with multiple interpreters, compare availability, and find a best fit for the customer's need.
However, this convenience comes with with a higher price tag as the agency must offset their overhead cost incurred employing staff and resources to fill the request.
Customers will typically interact directly with, and pay, the agency, which, in-turn, communicates and pays the interpreter for their services. The customer's interaction with the interpreter is usually limited to the services provided at the appointment.
Direct Contracting
When customers directly contact an interpreter and secure their services without a third-party (like an agency), this is typically called a "direct contract".
This option is typically less expensive, because the customer pays for the services "whole sale" from the provider, without additional overhead costs. Another benefit for the customer is knowing exactly who they are working with. While an agency could send any of their affiliated interpreters to fill a request, direct contracting typically means the customer speaks directly to the provider, confirms details, and negotiates terms.
The major draw back for customers is it requires substantially more labor on their part. The customer may have to contact multiple interpreters to find some one available. Customers who are not familiar with interpreter credentialing may not know what qualifications are needed for their appointment, and may find an interpreter who is available, but unqualified.
All communication and payment will be handled directly between the customer and interpreter.
